Art in Public Places Displays Photography from Local Artist at City Hall

AUSTIN, TX:  In its series of rotating exhibitions of work from local artists and organizations, the City of Austin’s Art in Public Places program will showcase Melanie West’s photos of the culture and personality of Austin and beyond.  Her pieces will be shown at the City’s Municipal Building, located at 124 W. 8th Street.  Opening on August 16, 2004, the exhibit will run through late November, 2004.  Contact Meghan Turner, AIPP Coordinator, at 974-9314, for an appointment to view the work.

West’s photographs explore moments ranging from a night at an Austin bingo hall, to dancing at Club 21 in Uhland, Texas.  Her portrait of Molly Ivins shows the notable Texas author with head thrown back in laughter.  Informed by a background in media and politics, West’s photography reveals stories and subtle human gestures.  A playful respect for both formalism and chance remains at the heart of all her work.

West was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and moved to Austin in 1994.  A photographer and filmmaker, her work in both mediums has been influenced by her large family, plenty of dancing and music, a respect and ability for work with one’s hands and the desert space around her.  She also has experience in music and radio production, working on Jim Hightower’s radio show and with such well-known musicians as Arlo Guthrie, Flaco Jimenez and Johnny Gimble through the programs of Texas Folklife Resources.

She directs her own experimental short films and documentaries, and her projects have screened at SXSW, CinemaTexas, the Santa Fe Film Festival, SWAMP/FotoFest at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Flicker, the Dallas Video Festival, Austin Cinemaker Co-op, Rural Route Festival, and Lady Fest.  Her collaborative short, Art Car, was included in Cinemaker’s selection of favorites for 2000.

More information on West and samples from her portfolio are available on her website, at www.swervepictures.com/melaniewest.

The City of Austin’s Art in Public Places acquires and maintains works of art for City facilities and parks through commissions, donations and loans for the cultural enrichment of Austin’s community.  AIPP is part of the Cultural Arts Division within the City of Austin’s Economic Growth and Redevelopment Services Office.  For more information on Art in Public Places, visit www.cityofaustin.org/aipp or contact Megan Weiler, Administrator, at 974-9312.
